What is a CO MOST Instructor?
CO MOST Instructors are nationally certified by a rider education curriculum to teach approved motorcycle operator safety training courses that develop knowledge, attitudes, habits, and skills necessary for the safe operation of a Motorcycle.
How to become a CO MOST Instructor?
- Find a local Vendor (Training School) you want to work with and
engage with in conversations and/or interview - Take the Beginner’s Course as a student rider within one year of your interested Instructor Training course, to familiarize yourself with the curricula and delivery
- Shadow a Beginner’s Course as an observer within one year of your interested Instructor Training course, to familiarize yourself with the process of teaching the course
(incredible amount of walking, cone setting, demos, and public speaking) - Complete and submit required paperwork:
- Curriculum Training Application Form (Request from your Vendor)
- Driver Record for (at least) last three years (Request from Driver Agency)
- CO MOST Candidate Training Agreement
Complete the Curriculum Training:
CO MOST typically hosts multiple Instructor Training sessions per year (due to unpredictable weather, typically April – September).
Typically these (at least 56 hour sessions) are held over two weekends, Thursday – Sunday, 8am-5pm, with the last Sat/Sun as “Student Teaching” class of live novice students.
Curriculum Training certification encompasses:
- Pre-requisite activities
- Pre-Training Course assignments
- In-Training Course evaluations:
- On-bike skills test
- Knowledge test
- Qualitative Assessment
- Performance evaluation during Student Teaching
Although the process to become a CO MOST Motorcycle Safety Instructor is a bit intense, it is remarkably rewarding. As an Instructor, you’ll find it is engaging, empowering, and a lot of (positive) work.
- Often un-learning what we think we know…
- Often learning LOTS! (Riding skills, coaching skills, etc.)
- Always helping novice students to self-discover!
